COVID 19 and Me.

COVID 19 versus ME!!!!

What a difference a day makes, what a difference several weeks make!!!

Recruitment has been a huge part of my life for the best part of 20 years – it brings ups and downs, highs and lows and lots of positive change, however, nothing, I mean, nothing, could have prepared me for March 2020!!

Being true to myself..

Whilst I for one have always been Optimistic, (dictionary meaning), hopeful and confident about the future!!  Right now, I am just not sure….

What I am sure about though is the ability to work under such different circumstances, the ability to teach my 10 year old, life cycle, times table, preposition, fractions, mass and volume.  (not so easy)

I have shared tears with fellow recruiters who during the early weeks were just being ‘let go’ with little understanding as to WHY them? and how they would cope?

I have chatted with many hiring managers who just ‘don’t know’ when they will be in a position to hire again, let alone use my services…..

Working from home hasn’t been totally new for me.  I would always work at least one day per week from home, just to contribute to my carbon footprint and not make an unnecessary journey when I could achieve what I needed to from home on that day. What it has taught me, this time round, is that more of a structure is required.  If you, like me, are parenting, teaching and trying to work, you need a plan.  A plan that traditionally I have agreed with myself the night before.  I find it closes my mind off from the current work day and rests easy with what the next day may look like.

Of course, right now, it is SUBJECT TO CHANGE and I get that and embrace it, if necessary.  Like most recruiters, I like control, I have realised though that this isn’t always possible, particularly right now.

For me, right now, I am just working through HOW to work through, if you understand me.  It’s the new normal and that is still evolving.

The working from home for many people is so new and uncharted.  It is a great way for employers to realise that being flexible can work and showing your trust in your superstar workers is essential, because right now we all have to trust and believe and  continue to be hopeful and confident about the future.

Whilst I may not be working on lots of live roles and ringing the bell of placement success, what I can say is I am using this time to be still, learn and adapt.  I am working on paving the future for the business, keeping in touch with people both personally and professionally and preparing for the return of recruitment as we knew it and BETTER……

My next project is to learn how to use our new database and export valuable information and support my 10 year old learn about the Vatican City – oh jeezzzzz
